AI Is Gutting Junior Developer Hiring. That's a Mistake.
Claude Code. Cursor. GitHub Copilot. These tools are genuinely changing how software gets built.
Experienced developers are moving faster, spending less time on boilerplate, and getting more done with smaller teams. The productivity gains are real and measurable. Anyone telling you otherwise hasn't used them seriously.
But something is getting lost in that story.
The productivity argument has become justification for gutting entry-level hiring. Salesforce froze engineering hires in 2025 citing AI-driven gains, then walked back its workforce narrative months later. Thousands of junior roles across the industry have quietly disappeared, not because the work is gone, but because AI is handling enough of it to make the headcount look unnecessary on a spreadsheet.
That calculation misses the point of what junior developers were actually for.
The apprenticeship layer wasn't about output. It was about developing the people who would eventually own the system. That layer is where pattern recognition gets built, where institutional knowledge transfers, where someone learns the difference between code that works in a demo and code that survives contact with a real system. AI tools don't replace that developmental arc. They just make it easier to pretend it isn't necessary.
IBM figured this out. They're tripling entry-level developer hiring in 2026, explicitly including the roles AI was supposed to replace. Their reasoning was straightforward: companies that stop hiring juniors today will have no seniors to promote in five years.
The productivity gains are real. The overpromising is also real. And somewhere in between, a generation of would-be developers is being told the industry doesn't need them by the same companies that will be paying 30% premiums to poach mid-level talent in 2029 because they gutted their own pipeline.
